From April 17 to 18, the 4th Synthetic Biology Industry Expo 2026 (SBC2026) grandly opened at the Nanjing Yangtze River International Conference Center. At the sub-forum on "Biomanufacturing and New Materials" held concurrently with the exhibition, Yang Liguo, a renowned expert in synthetic biological process design and Deputy Chief Engineer of the Design Center of TIANS Group, delivered a keynote speech entitled "Biological Intelligent Manufacturing, Empowering the Future: Industrial Engineering Design and Practice of Synthetic Biology". He stated that advanced engineering design serves as a crucial bridge connecting synthetic biology from research and development to large-scale production, and elaborated on aspects including aseptic design, economic design, intelligent design, systematic design, green design, and safety design in detail. Mr. Yang Liguo emphasized that preventing contamination is the top priority in fermentation workshops. Although contamination risks can be avoided through advanced sterilization processes, appropriate inoculation and feeding methods, dehumidification and sterilization of compressed air, and rational workshop layout, there still remains a contamination challenge of approximately 30% with unknown causes. Engineering design must go beyond the "drawing" stage and achieve an in-depth integration of process mechanisms and on-site experience.
